How To Put On Eye Shadow
The Tones
When choosing the makeup for the day, your eye makeup in one way or another needs to be separated into tones of light, medium and dark. It’s fine to add more if you want a complex look, but it’s important to have at least three, anything less will leave you with a strange appearance. Your best approach for picking your pallet is to choose your medium tone/color first since it is the base that you are working off of. The lighter and darker tones will be easy to pick out from there.

How you put on eyeshadow doesn’t mean you have to use three separate colors for your three tones. One color can be used for your entire eyeshadow color scheme. To achieve your medium tone you will want to swipe the color on top of itself multiple times, followed with one swipe for your highlighter and then lastly mix a drop or two of water for the dark tone which can also make it double into your eyeliner.

When you are putting on eyeshadow, your natural features are going to be your guide as to wear you put on your tones/colors. The natural contours and lines of your eyes along with your eyebrows will dictate where your tones should begin and end.
The Basic Application
The three main steps of tone go as follows: The medium tone should be applied first directly over the eyelid itself following the contour of your eyeball. Then your light tone is your highlighter and should be applied directly above the medium shadow up to your eyebrow. Next up is your dark tone which is used to emphasize your eyes and add detail as well as make them appear larger. So a small narrow line should be placed above the eyelash line and a small amount should narrowly line the shape of your eye between the medium and lighter shadows. These two lines will connect at the outer corner of your eye and then drawn out slightly past it. You’ll want to stop drawing out your dark tone once it’s directly parallel to the end of your eyebrow above. Once finished, if you want something like the smoky eye look you’ll then want to smudge gently the darker tone to it gently blend it with the other colors. You can, of course, skip this if you want the cat eye look or something more dramatic.
The Deets
Your dark and light tones can be used to add further detail to your look at the end of you choose to. How you can put on eyeshadow at this point is best done with the eyeliner brush and a steady hand. A small amount of the darker shadow can be lined lightly below your bottom eyelashes as well as on your waterline. Dab a small amount of a lighter color at the inner corner of your eyes to make them look more vibrant.
Overall Balance
There are two dominating features of our faces which are obviously first above all things your eyes, with your mouth following in a distant second. So in the daylight hours or at casual settings you don’t want these two features competing too much. What this means is if that you are wearing a bright and vivid shade in your mouth, then you want your eye makeup to be toned down and more neutral or vice versa.
